MATCH REPORT
Sutton Coldfield 3 Shard End 5
Another very disappointing team performance in what is becoming possibly the worst run of form for our team in Superleague for 4 or 5 years. You always have one or two players not quite on top of their game, but with the exception of Pikey most of the side have had a bad run over the last few months.
Marc Norton (17.44) 0 Adam Gallett (20.88) 3
Norty out of sorts in this one. Adam took a poor first leg, pulling out a 111 shot out to win in 27 darts. The second was better, with Adam clocking 88 for 21 darts. Adam made it 3-0 in 24 darts, and Norty will be disappointed not to get even a shot at a double in the game. Norty 0 tons, Adam 5 tons. 1-0 Shard End.
John Kavanagh (21.78) 3 Tony Commerford (17.71) 0
JK won the first after a slow start in 26 darts. It did pick up a little after that with legs in 22 and 21 darts for 3-0, and as in game 1 the loser not getting a dart at a double in the match. Tony did win best dressed though, with a big tuft of bright red hair at the front and wearing a Celtic shirt! JK 5 tons, Tony 0 tons. 1-1 the match score.
James Owen (20.49) 0 Kevin Smith (20.31) 3
Kev down first in the first leg, but missed doubles almost let Jay in. Kev eventually took it in 29 darts. Jay again had a chance in the 2nd before Kev took it in 24 darts. The 3rd was a better leg. After 18 darts each Kev was on 60 and Jay on 53, however, Kev had the darts and made the advantage pay for a 21 dart 3rd leg and 3-0. Jay 3 tons, Kev 6 tons. Shard End 2-1 up.
Chris Millward (21.78) 3 John Frost (19.14) 0
Milly took a low scoring 1st leg in 24 darts, and then took the second in 25 after missed doubles by John. The 3rd leg was much better, Milly winning it comfortably in 20 darts for 3-0. Milly 2 tons, John 2 tons. 2-2 the match score.
Paul Cumming (16.63) 1 Mark Birch (23.72) 3
One that Paul will want to forget. Mark took the first comfortably in 20 darts, but Paul dug in to level in a close 2nd leg in 26 darts. Mark raised the bar in the next two taking the games in 19 & 20 darts, but Paul could not find his usual fluency. Paul 2 tons, Mark 9 tons. 3-2 Shard End.
Mark Wild (22.25) 2 Matt Gallett (25.15) 3
Probably the key game of the night as far as the result was concerned. Wildy was slow to start but took the 1st leg in 26 after Matt missed chances. Matt took the 2nd in 20 darts, but had a shot for 13 darts after starting 140, 100, 85, 140. Wildy re-took the lead in the 3rd in 24 darts, but Matt levelled again in 14 darts (60, 140, 140, 100, 61f). The deciding leg could have gone either way. First Matt missed 44, then Wildy missed 42, to allow Matt to take double 10 for 19 darts. Wildy 5 tons, Matt 10 tons. 4-2 Shard End.
Dane Vickers (22.74) 1 Ian McFarlane (27.11) 3
A big ask for Dane in his first season with the point at stake and playing Macca. Ian went one up in 16 darts including 2 x 140. Dane bounced back with a 19 dart 2nd leg. Ian then went out in 15 darts (180, 45, 140, 58, 78f) for 2-1. Dane was first to a double in the 4th missing tops for 18 darts, but further misses allowed Ian to take it in 24 darts for 3-1, the MOM, and also the match for Shard End. Dane 2 tons, Ian 10 tons plus a 180. 5-2 to Shard End.
Rob Hawker (24.64) 3 Colin Mace (21.95) 0
The draw had clearly gone against us, particularly with Pikey on last. Rob took a comfortable first leg, clocking 68 for 18 darts. The 2nd was much closer with Colin hitting 3 tons and having 3 at a double before Rob took it in 20. The third saw Rob clock 70 for 23 darts and 3-0, taking the Sutton MOM in the process. Rob 6 tons, Colin 6 tons. Shard End winning 5-3.
This performance did show the difference a bit of confidence can make. We went to Shard End earlier in the season and won 7-1 with an excellent team performance. No win for us since December, and its clear we need a bit of a lift. The ton count was possibly our lowest ever in Superleague, and its hard to argue against the fact that the better side won on the night.
The plusses to take from the game are that Rob continues to look capable of beating anyone put in front of him, and that after a dip both Milly & JK have recorded back to back 3-0 wins which will hopefully bring improved confidence. Wildy also looked much more comfortable, and had 2 darts to win his match against a very impressive Matt Gallett. A different draw would have almost certainly seen him back to winning ways.
It’s on to Cherry Tree away next week, and we know we need a much improved team performance there.
