MATCH REPORT

Rugby 6 Sutton Coldfield 2

Another disappointing defeat with us going 6-0 down at one point, and as we saw last week a number of us are just lacking the belief recently that we have had in abundance in recent years. That said, Rugby always seem to have the edge when we meet and it is a very difficult place to play, particularly for those with an early draw after a long trip down there.

Matt Edgar (25.91) 3 Paul Cumming (21.63) 0

Matt in excellent form for Rugby, winning the first leg in 19 darts (a shot at 15), the second leg in 18 darts, and the 3rd in 21 darts after narrowly missing a 118 finish. Paul had chances in the 3rd leg, but a tough ask. Matt the MOM for Rugby on the night. Matt 9 tons, Paul 2 tons. 1-0 Rugby.

Hemal Tailor (22.02) 3 Mark Wild (19.64) 2

Hemal took the first in 20 darts including a maximum. The second leg saw doubles missed both sides before Mark took it in an uncharacteristic 33 darts. Mark looked like he was taking control in the 3rd leaving 25 after just 15 darts, but Hemal clocked 115 to go 2-1 up. Mark bounced back in the 4th leg for 2-2 in 24 darts. The decider saw Hemal start 100, 140 with the darts and it proved crucial as he took the leg in 18 darts for something of a surprise 3-2 win. Hemal 7 tons plus a 180, Mark 4 tons. 2-0 Rugby.

Chris Morgan (20.71) 3 Dane Vickers (18.96) 1

Dane, like Mark, looked a good bet on paper, but this wasn’t one of his better games. Chris clocked 68 to take the first in 21 darts. Dane levelled in 26 darts, but Chris went back ahead in 23 darts. Chris sewed it up at 3-1 with a 25 dart 4th leg. Chris 5 tons, Dane 3 tons. 3-0 Rugby.

Terry James (23.86) 3 Rob Hawker (23.85) 0

Pikey had terrible luck with doubles in this one, but you have to give credit to Terry for taking his chances. The first leg saw Pikey miss out on a 122 finish, before Terry took it in 24 darts. Pikey then hit 134 to leave tops in the second, but missed 3 at a double. Terry took out 60 for a 20 dart game and 2-0. The 3rd leg saw Pikey miss double 19 for a 118 finish, and Terry took advantage again with a 19 dart game for 3-0. Terry 5 tons, Rob 8 tons. 4-0 Rugby.

Carl Green (23.48) 3 James Owen (22.30) 1

Carl won the first in 19 darts, though Jay had a shot at it. The 2nd leg saw Jay on top, but 6 missed at a double allowed Carl to take it in 25 darts. Jay struck back in the 3rd with a 23 dart leg, but Carl closed out a close 4th leg in 19 darts for 3-1 and the match to Rugby. Carl 5 tons, Jay 1 ton. 5-0 Rugby.

Prakash Jiwa (24.64) 3 Marc Norton (19.32) 0

A tough ask for Norty against the formidable Prakash, particularly against the darts. Prakash went comfortably 1-0 up in 22 darts, but Norty pushed him all the way in the second, having 5 at a double before Prakash finished in 23 darts. An impressive 16 dart 3rd leg (60, 140, 60, 60, 131, 50f) completed the 3-0 victory. Prakash 5 tons, Norty 3 tons. 6-0 Rugby.

Rab Palmer (17.76) 0 John Kavanagh (25.47) 3

A comfortable if ordinary 1st leg for JK in 24 darts. The second leg though came completely out of the blue, culminating in a shot at double 12 for a 9-dart game. Back to back 180’s by JK set up a 141 finish. The 60 went in, then the 57 and the shot for the double was really not that far away. The leg was finally taken in 12 darts with Rab back on 346. JK then took the 3rd leg in 23 darts, bizarrely hitting double 12 (that had cost him that 9 darter) at the first time of asking this time, for 3-0 and the Sutton MOM. Rab 2 tons, JK 5 tons and 2 x 180’s. 6-1 Rugby.

Ricky Reid (18.87) 0 Chris Millward (20.31) 3

Chris held his nerve to take a close first leg against the darts in 22 darts. He made it 2-0 with a steady 21 dart leg. Chris left 82 after 15 in the 3rd but poor finishing both sides dragged the averages down, with Chris finally taking it in 31 darts. Ricky 5 tons, Chris 6 tons. Final score 6-2 to Rugby.

Running averages were Rugby 22.16, Sutton 21.44. Again not as good as we would expect. Missed doubles played a big part this time though.

Clearly some work to do for us, but we do have a local derby coming up against Shard End, and those are games you would like to think you need little pumping up for.

Congratulations though to Rugby, they have a good team spirit and it is not long ago that they almost folded as a Super league side.

It was a late one back, and a big thanks to James ‘or shall I call him Jason’ Owen who drove the bus on the night. We didn’t quite get our route back right, hope it didn’t delay you too much mate!
