MATCH REPORT

Sutton Sports 5 Rugby 3

This is a fixture that can always go either way. Prior to this match our record since 2005-06 against Rugby was Won 4, Drawn 2, Lost 5, so the win on the night squares things up overall, but as always there were a few ups and downs on the way.

Matt Gallett (24.24) 3 Paul Bodsworth (13.68) 0

Probably the longest trip we make is to Rugby, and possibly vice-versa so when we meet it is always tough for the player on first, with limited time for practice. Nothing really went for Boz in this one, and with Matt in great form lately, this was a tough ask for Boz. A fairly pedestrian first leg from Matt, out in 25 darts, but he got going in the second leg with 3 x 100 and clocking 62 in 2 for a 17-dart leg. Matt then started 140 in the third leg, then scored steadily before taking out 64 in 2 for a 20 dart game. Matt 5 tons, Paul 1 ton. 1-0 Sutton.

Chris Turnbull (22.05) 3 Carl Green (22.87) 1

Chris has deserved a bit of luck after so many 3-2 defeats this season, but the first leg looked to be slipping away when Carl, an experienced County player, left 76 after just 12 darts including a 180 and 100. However, Carl couldn’t finish with 9 further darts from there, and Chris stepped in with back-to-back tons and took out tops for a 22-dart game. A close second leg could have gone either way, but neither really found the big score needed and Chris found the double first for a 23-dart leg and a 2-0 lead. Carl didn’t put a foot wrong in the third leg, starting 121, 100 and out in 16 darts with Chris left back on 130. Each player scored 140 & 100 in the fourth leg and both missed a few chances before Chris took out double 3 for a 22 dart game and a 3-1 win, his ever first win in Super league. Chris 4 tons, Carl 6 tons & a 180. 2-0 Sutton.

Chris Millward (24.33) 3 Chris Morgan (18.99) 1

Milly is in a great run of form at present and started with a 21 dart leg which included a 100 & 140. Chris Morgan bounced back and began the second leg 140, 123. Steady scoring form Milly got him back into it but he missed several chances and Chris closed out in 23 darts for 1-1. Milly re-took the lead in the third leg with a steady 21 dart game, and raised his game further in the fourth leg with a 16 dart game (100, 100, 100, 99, 62, 40f) to win the match 3-1. Milly 7 tons, Chris 4 tons. Sutton 3-0 up.

Mark Wild (21.89) 1 Hemal Tailor (20.14) 3

A routine first leg for Wildy out in 19 darts including a score of 123, with Hemal way back on 252. No-one though could have predicted what was to come next despite the fact Hemal was a bit of a bogey player against us last year in his first season in Superleague winning home & away. Wildy started slowly in the second but back to back scores of 135 & 111 left him on tops after 21. He never got a shot at it though with Hemal clocking 60 for 23 darts. Wildy scored steadily in the third leg, but Hemal with back to back scores of 100 & 140 got ahead, before clocking 110 for an 18 dart game and a 2-1 lead against throw. The fourth leg saw Hemal score 2 x 100 & 136 to leave 51 after 15 darts, though Wildy was still in touch. It got a bit edgy on the doubles though and after 16 missed darts at doubles between the pair it was Hemal who took double 2 for a 28-dart leg and a 3-1 win. Sutton 3-1 up on the night.

John Kavanagh (22.56) 1 Martin Bowley (25.09) 3

JK scoring 140 & 121 in the first leg, but 3 x 100 & 102 from Martin saw him down first. Martin missed, but JK then missed tops himself and Martin, new to the County set up made no further mistake taking it in 22 darts. The second leg saw JK level in 21 darts including 100 & 2 x 95 scores with Martin back on 72. JK started the third leg with back-to-back tons, but Martin went out in an excellent 15 darts (59, 140, 140, 60, 102f) to lead 2-1. Back to back tons from JK in the fourth saw him down first, but four missed darts at a double allowed Martin in and he closed out in 22 darts for a 3-1 win and the Rugby MOM. JK 7 tons, Martin 9 tons. Sutton leading 3-2 on the night.

Adam Gallett (19.21) 0 Ricky Reed (23.12) 3

Ricky made the better start and a 140 left him on 118, which he took in 3 for an 18-dart first leg. Ricky started with a 140 in the second, but steady scoring from Adam dragged him back into the leg. Adam had a chance for a 110 finish, and a further 3 darts at a double to win the leg before Ricky closed out in 25 darts for 2-0. Adam scored 140 & 121 in the third leg to get down first to a double, but again missed chances with 5 at a double allowing Ricky, with 2 x 100 himself in the leg, to take out tops for 22 darts and a 3-0 win. Adam 2 tons, Ricky 5 tons. Match score now 3-3.

Mark Birch (23.21) 3 Peter Scrivener (20.33) 2

Inconsistent scoring from both in the first leg, and a couple of missed doubles either side before Pete went 1-0 up in 26 darts. Mark responded with back-to-back tons in the second leg and was out in 22 darts for 1-1. You always know there will be a special leg somewhere from Birchy in the match and it came in the third leg, as he went out in 14 darts (180, 140, 45, 100, 36f) for a 2-1 lead. Mark then started the fourth leg 100, 100, 140 and it looked game over. However, Pete somehow stayed within reach and when Mark missed 6 darts from tops, Pete stepped in and took it in 19 darts against throw for 2-2. Birchy had it all to do in a very even fifth leg. Both players missed chances before Birchy held his nerve and took it in 26 darts for a vital 3-2 win. Mark 10 tons and a 180, Pete 5 tons. Sutton 4-3 up.

Ian McFarlane (28.87) 3 Matt Edgar (27.42) 1

Fittingly the game of the night decided things. Ian with 3 x 100 and a 95 in the first leg got down first and out in 19 darts. Matty found his form in the second leg but despite scores of 100, 140 & 101 it was Ian who took a brilliant 14-dart leg (137, 96, 140, 78, 50f) for a 2-0 lead. Two more tons and a 99 from Macca in the third but Matt replied with back-to-back scores of 100 & 140 then took out tops for 16 darts and the score was 2-1. Macca’s steadier scoring effectively reclaimed him the darts in the fourth leg in which Matt had started with throw, and with 2 successive tons Ian left 94, which he took out in 3 for 18 darts and a 3-1 win, winning the Sutton MOM in the process. Ian 9 tons, Matt 7 tons.

Final score 5-3 to Sutton.

Running averages were Sutton 23.30, Rugby 21.46.

Tons were Sutton 48+1, Rugby 44+1.

A game that as always swung one way then the other, but we were delighted to nick it in the end. It will certainly be a night for Chris Turnbull to remember, and we are sure he will now go on from here to build on that first win.

Good luck to Rugby for what’s left of the season. We look forward to some more close contests in the years to come.

Next up it’s Coventry Railway at home, which promises to be another very close game.
