MATCH REPORT

Sutton Sports 6 Erdington 2

This is always our most ‘local’ local Derby, and as such we all know each other pretty well. It makes the bragging rights all the more important, so it was with great relief and satisfaction that we ended up 6-2 winners on the night.

Chris Millward (26.72) 3 Wayne Mynard (22.49) 1

A great result for Milly in only his 3rd appearance of the season. Milly took the first against throw with scores of 125 & 100 and a 72 finish for a 20-dart leg. Wayne bounced back well for the visitors with an 18 dart leveller, his only score under 60 being the 52 finish. Milly then made it 3 breaks of throw in a row with a 19 dart 3rd leg giving him a 2-1 lead. He saved the best for last though, a sensational 12 dart leg (100, 180, 81, 140 finish) to win the game 3-1. This leg achieved Milly’s highest finish and least darts in Super League. A fitting way to go out in what was Milly’s 50th Super League game for Sutton. Milly 7 tons and a 180, Wayne 3 tons. 1-0 to Sutton.

Matt Gallett (24.64) 3 Tony Comerford (21.51) 0

An excellent start for Matt in the first (121, 97, 140) saw him sat on 143 after just 9 darts against his former Shard End team-mate. He almost slipped up, however, taking 7 darts from tops before finishing in 23 darts for 1-0. Back to back tons set Matt up nicely in the second leg, and he duly went 2-0 up in 20 darts against throw. The 3rd was better still with Matt leaving just 96 after 12 darts having started 85, 83, 137, 100. He closed the leg out in 18 darts for a 3-0 win. Matt 6 tons, Tony 3 tons. Sutton 2-0 up.

Dane Vickers (21.49) 3 Kevin Smith (22.37) 2

A re-run of the first half draw for these two. On that occasion Stav had won for Erdington. This time it went to the wire. Stav always had the edge in the first leg, taking it in 21 darts. Dane started the 2nd leg with back to back tons, and having got down first levelled in 21 darts. A good 3rd leg from Stav with 2 x 140 saw him ahead 2-1. The 4th was pretty close all the way down before Dane took it in 24 darts to square the game up for the second time. Dane started the last leg well with 140, 92, 121, to leave 148 after 9. It looked all over but missed doubles allowed Stav to get down to 80. Dane finally took the leg in 24 darts for a 3-2 win before Kev got chance to nick it. Dane 5 tons, Kev 5 tons. 3-0 to Sutton.

Adam Gallett (24.09) 1 John Morris (25.76) 3

A steady first leg from Adam saw him down first and out in 19 darts for 1-0. He then, after trailing in the next, had a great chance for 2-0 missing double 18 for a 113 finish. John didn’t need asking again and levelled in 24 darts. The 3rd leg was a great leg from John out in 15 darts (125, 95, 98, 77, 106 finish). The 4th leg saw more of the same from John as he started 85, 100, 121, 99 to leave 96 after 12 darts. Adam pressured him to leave 86 after 15 but John took the leg in 18 darts for a 3-1 win and the Erdington MOM on the night. Adam 2 tons, John 6 tons. Sutton leading 3-1.

Ian McFarlane (24.15) 3 Brendan Lysaght (21.20) 2

Another meeting of former Shard End team-mates. Ian looked home and dry in the first leg but missed double 10 for a 127 finish in what would have been a 15 dart leg. Brendan pressured with steady scores and got his chance as Ian missed doubles and took the leg in 23 darts. Again Ian looked in control of the second, but again he missed a chance and Brendan clocked 94 for 2-0. Ian has made a habit of comebacks this season though, and it started in the 3rd leg as he took out 56 for a 21 dart leg against throw. In the 4th Ian again opened up a lead, this time finishing quickly in 20 darts. The decider was a good leg, steady throwing from Brendan with throw, but Ian knocked in a 137 and followed up with a maximum before finishing the leg in 17 darts for a 3-2 win. Ian 5 tons and a 180, Brendan 4 tons. Sutton 4-1 up.

Mark Birch (19.95) 3 Stan Andrews (19.48) 1

Mark having started with a 140 was always ahead but ended up on double one before finishing in 25 darts for 1-0. A 123 in the second set Mark up nicely with 77 left but after finding the first treble it took 10 darts to finish, eventually closing it out in 29 darts. Stan played a steady 3rd leg, reducing the deficit in 19 darts, but this appeared to wake Mark up who looked more himself and with 5 successive scores over 80 including back to back tons he ran out a 3-1 winner in 21 darts. Mark 6 tons, Stan 3 tons.

John Kavanagh (20.04) 1 Mark Archer (19.80) 3

These two are probably getting sick of the sight of each other having met twice before in the last few months in local league, the last time being around a fortnight before this game. On the last occasion Mark ran out 2-1 winner, and he followed that up with victory here. JK had a great chance to take the first against throw but missed tops for a 115 finish. Mark duly responded by taking the leg in 25 darts. The second was a better leg, with 2 tons apiece before Mark went 2-0 up in 20 darts. JK reduced the arrears in the 3rd with a 100 & 125 and finishing in 20 darts. The 4th leg was very even if mediocre. Both missed chances before Mark took it in a marathon 30 darts for a 3-1 win. JK 5 tons, Mark 4 tons. 5-2 Sutton

Mark Wild (29.37) 3 Jim Collins (25.32) 2

Wildy on last again, and started well with 100 & 140 to leave 47 after 15 darts. Jim was in dazzling form, however, and took the leg in 15 darts against throw (85, 60, 140, 116, 100 finish) for 1-0. Wildy scored steadily in the 2nd and a timely 140 set him up to win in 17 darts and level at 1-1. Another steady scoring leg gave Wildy the edge as he took out 78 for 18 darts and a 2-1 lead. Wildy hit a maximum in the 4th leg but Jim hung in there and when given the opportunity clocked 116 for 21 darts and levelled at 2-2. The final leg was vintage Wildy, out in 15 darts (85, 81, 140, 99, 96 finish) for a 3-2 win and the Sutton MOM, with Wildy’s best Super League average yet for Sutton, in his record 117th appearance. Wildy 6 tons and a 180, Jim 8 tons.

It was a good contest against our old mates from down the road. We wish them well for the rest of the season, and they certainly are building a side that will give most sides in this league a real run for their money.

The match stats showed running averages as:

Sutton Sports 23.81, our best of the season so far.
Erdington 22.24.

Tons were Sutton 42+3, Erdington 36.

Next week is the Dennis Roberts Singles, and the next league game is now in the new year on 6th January 2011 at Bishopsgate in the re-arranged game.
