MATCH REPORT

Sutton Sports 5 Coventry Railway 3

This, as against Rugby last week, was a game against a side we have had mixed fortunes against in the past. Since Coventry Railway joined the league in 2007-08 our record against them prior to this game was played 9, won 4, drawn 2, lost 3.

This time we got ahead early on, but Coventry Railway came back at us and very nearly snatched a draw towards the end. However, we hung on, and ground out another narrow victory.

John Kavanagh (21.17) 3 Sean Turner (15.07) 0

JK started the better scoring 140 & 100 in the first leg, and leaving tops after 15 darts. Double trouble kicked in though, and he eventually took it in 25 darts. Sean was clearly not himself on the night, but a 118 from him in the second leg gave him a chance to level up as JK missed a further 7 at a double. It wasn’t to be though as JK finally took that leg in 29 darts. The third leg was better from JK, as back-to -back scores of 100 & 140 helped him leave 85 after 15 darts and this time he did take it his double at the first attempt clocking the 85 in 2 for a 17-dart leg. JK 5 tons, Sean 2 tons. 1-0 Sutton.

Dane Vickers (18.39) 3 Martin Giddings (17.96) 2

Martin hit a 140 in the first leg, but indifferent scoring afterwards allowed Dane to reach his double first and he took it in 26 darts. Dane brightened up in the second and scores of 140,100 & 108 helped him leave 36 after 15 darts. Martin kept in touch with scores of 100 & 140 himself and when Dane missed 6 at a double, Martin stepped in to level in 22 darts. Neither player really found a big score in the next though Dane’s steadier scoring got him down first. More double trouble as Dane missed an incredible 19 darts at a double before Martin, who himself had several chances, finished in 38 darts to lead 2-1. With any chance of decent match averages pretty much wiped out after the third leg, a better fourth leg saw Dane level at 2-2 in 21 darts. Martin hit 121 in the fifth to gain the advantage, but…..more missed doubles, this time from Martin, allowed Dane in and he sewed up the game 3-2 with a 29 dart leg. Dane 4 tons, Martin 6 tons. 2-0 Sutton Sports.

Ian McFarlane (27.83) 3 Tony Nolan (24.67) 0

A lesson in finishing at the first time of asking from Macca, taking a close first leg in 21 darts with Tony left on 20. A great second leg from Ian starting with a 180 and adding a 140 before taking it out in 18 darts for 2-0, with Tony this time back on 120 after 15 darts. Tony found 3 x 100 in the third leg, but Ian claimed his second MOM performance in a row by taking it in an excellent 15 darts for 3-0 (100, 61, 134, 99, 107 finish). It was great to see Tony Nolan back playing again after a lengthy lay-off. He is one of the game’s nice guys and all at Sutton wish him well on his comeback. Ian 6 tons and a 180, Tony 6 tons. Sutton leading 3-0.

Chris Turnbull (22.93) 1 Mark Westgarth (27.87) 3

A great start from Chris following his first Superleague win last week, as he hit a 180 in the first leg and took out double 10 for 19 darts and a 1-0 lead. Mark started to find his form in the second with two tons and a 79 finish to level it at 1-1 in 21 darts. In the third leg Mark hit a maximum which helped him down to tops after 15 darts. He took the leg in 19 darts with Chris sat on 74. Mark, seemingly getting better all the time, then played the leg of the night to complete a 3-1 win and claim the Coventry MOM with a 13-dart leg (100, 140, 140, 93, 28 finish). Chris 2 tons and a 180, Mark 8 tons and a 180. 3-1 now to Sutton.

Chris Millward (21.14) 2 Kevin Woodward (21.12) 3

A steady start from Milly, but scores of 108 & 121 saw Kevin first to a double and he took the leg in 19 darts. Two successive tons in the second leg put Milly ahead, but Kevin bounced back with a maximum. In the end, however, it came to doubles with Milly missing 11 darts at a double, and Kevin taking a 2-0 lead in 30 darts. More nervy finishing in the third leg, before Milly took it in 26 darts to get the score back to 2-1. Milly hit scores of 100 & 135 in the fourth leg but still had to rely on missed doubles from Kevin to level it at 2-2 in 23 darts. Having seemingly weathered the early storm Milly left just 8 after 12 darts in the decider as he started 100, 100, 180, 113, but Kevin who might have thought his chance had gone never gave up and hung in with 2 tons, and when Milly missed 6 more at doubles Kevin took tops for a 21-dart leg and a hard fought 3-2 win. Milly 10 tons and a 180, Kevin 9 tons and a 180. 3-2 to Sutton.

Mark Birch (20.90) 3 Will Roberts (21.04) 2

Mark set off with 140, but Will replying with 121 & 140 took the first leg in 19 darts. Birchy levelled in the second, out in 23 darts, and looked back on course when he clocked 83 in the third leg for a 24-dart game. Will was trailing in the fourth leg despite a couple of tons, but when left 108 he clocked out for 24 darts and it was 2-2. Will started the deciding leg with a maximum, but a 140 from Mark got him in front as they got to the business end of the game. A few doubles were missed before Mark nailed the double 8 for a 3-2 win in 25 darts. Mark 4 tons, Will 6 tons and a 180. Sutton 4-2.

Mark Wild (23.18) 1 Shaun Hackett (24.22) 3

Wildy started 120, 135 and was out in 19 darts despite Shaun hitting a couple of tons himself. The second leg went dart for dart, and again missed doubles proved costly as Mark missed but Shaun took it to level in 20 darts. The third leg followed the pattern of the second with the scores very even, but this time Wildy got just one dart at the bull before Shaun, with advantage of throw made no mistake to go 2-1 up in 22 darts. Despite starting with a 100 Wildy found himself behind in the fifth leg, as Shaun left 75 after 15 darts including 2 tons. Shaun took out the 75 in 3 darts for an 18-dart leg and secured a 3-1 win. Mark 6 tons, Shaun 5 tons. Sutton 4-3.

Matt Gallett (24.24) 3 Paul Beverley (22.09) 0

Business as usual for Matt in the first leg, as he scored steadily before taking out a 70 finish for a 21-dart game, with Paul still back on 165. Paul replied in great fashion leaving just 64 after 12 darts as he started the second leg 140, 100, 100, 97, but missed chances let Matty back into it and he took out tops for 23 darts and 2-0. Paul started well again in the third 100, 100, 85, 100 to leave 116 after 12 but a timely 140 from Matt left 72 to pressure the throw. Paul failed to take out the 116 and Matt duly took out the remaining 72 for an 18-dart leg and a 3-0 win which sealed the points for Sutton. Matt 2 tons, Paul 6 tons.

Final score Sutton Sports 5 Coventry Railway 3.

A great win for us but Coventry Railway will know they had their chances.

Running averages which were savaged by some horrendous finishing by both sides at times were Sutton 22.47, Coventry Railway 21.76.

Tons went in favour of the visitors Sutton 39+3, Coventry Railway 48+3, though it was a strange game, not only for missed doubles but one that saw more scores of between 80 and 99 than there were tons on the night.

It was a result that means we have lost only one of the last 6, and that to the runaway leaders Leamington, so there are signs we can grind out results now.

There are still 3 very tough games to go starting at Nuneaton on March 1st, and very little to choose in the table between all the sides outside the top 4. If we can maintain our run of form we may yet, after a slow start to the season prove to be dark horses in that race for 5th place. It is all going to depend on performances in those last three games.
