MATCH REPORT
Coventry Railway 5 Sutton Coldfield 3
Another defeat,
and this season has certainly started very differently to last season. Three of
the 4 fixtures have been exactly the same as last year but what was 4 wins from
4 a year ago and 33 points, has become just 1 win in 4 and 18 points this
season.
Jason Mulligan (21.22) 3 Chris Millward (22.01)
1
Milly started well taking the first in 16 darts with a bull
finish, but Jason levelled in a disappointing 2nd leg. Jason went 2-1 up in the
3rd leg in 23 darts after Milly had bust a 90 finish. Jason then made it 3-1
with the darts in another 23 dart leg. 4 tons for Milly, 5 for Jason. 1-0 to the
Railway.
Tony Nolan (25.47) 3 Carl Perry (19.89) 0
Tony won a disappointing 1st leg for the Railway, but then
kicked on with the confidence of a 1-0 lead. He took a much better 2nd in 19
darts, despite Carl having a chance at a double. Tony then took it 3-0 with an
excellent 16 dart game. 3 tons for Carl, 5 for Tony. 2-0 to the Railway.
Darren Swords (21.96) 2 Mark Wild (22.24) 3
Wildy missed his shot in the first letting Darren in for 21
darts to lead 1-0. Wildy almost slipped 2 behind missing 10 at a double before
nicking the second leg. Wildy took the next in 23, but Darren levelled again in
21. The 5th leg turned out to be the best of the 5 with Wildy leaving a double
after 14 darts. There were some nervy darts from both players before Wildy took
it in 20 darts. 7 tons for Wildy, 10 for Darren. 2-1 to the Railway.
Scott Rand (30.06) 3 Dave Wallace (18.33) 0
Scott in great form for the Railway winning in 19, 16 & 15 darts for
3-0 and the MOM award, and it would have been tough for anyone to live with
those kind of darts. Dave kept plugging but could just not find enough big
scores to pressure Scott. 2 tons for Dave, 8 for Scott. 3-1 to the Railway.
Martin Giddings (20.02) 0 Rob Hawker (26.84) 3
Rob in great nick winning 3-0 in 20, 17 & 19 darts. Despite Martin
hitting a 180, he never got below 100 as Rob took it comfortably. 5 tons to Rob,
2 to Martin and a 180. 3-2 to the Railway.
Mark Westgarth
(27.83) 3 Glenn West (20.37) 0
Mark taking this for the Railway
3-0 in 17, 16 & 21. Glenn, like some of the other games on the night unable
to hit enough big scores to put his opponent under pressure. Glenn 2 tons, 6 for
Mark. 4-2 to the Railway.
Shaun Hackett (22.06) 0 Mark
Kane (28.90) 3
Great performance from Coke earning him the
Sutton MOM. He took the 1st in 18 with a 115 finish. The second leg went in 16
darts and included a 180, but could have been even better with Coke sat on 81
after 9 darts. The 3rd leg was another 18 dart game. 10 tons and a 180 for
Kaney, 4 for Shaun. 4-3 now to the Railway with one to go.
Paul Beverley (19.23) 3 Paul Cumming (18.61) 1
Tough for Paul, new to the side to be lefty in the position of playing
the last game needing to win to earn us a draw. Paul took a long drawn out 1st
leg, and it seemed certain this would bring back his confidence. Paul played
steadily in the 2nd but his opponent clocked 111 for an 18 dart second leg to
level. A steady start in the 3rd saw Paul Cumming first to a double, but 10
missed darts allowed the Railway lad to find double 7 to take a 2-1 lead. The
4th followed the same pattern with steady scoring from Paul. He missed tops for
a 120 finish, and had a further 6 darts to take the leg before Paul Beverley
found double 10 for 22 darts and the match. 5 tons to Paul Cumming, 7 to Paul
Beverley. Final score 5-3 to the Railway.
There is a need for a bit
more confidence within the side at the moment, and this of course changes with a
few wins. The wins will come, but we will need results soon if we are to mount
any sort of challenge. As it was though we hit just 38 tons on the night, and I
don't think we have had a tally that low for a few seasons. Last season it was
rare to drop below 50.
Coventry Railway are a much improved side and
deserved their win on the night. They have to come to our place though later in
the season, and by that time I certainly expect our new lads to have settled in,
and we can hopefully reverse this result.
