MATCH REPORT

Sutton Sports 7 Coventry Railway 1

Sutton Sports recorded their biggest win of the season to date in this one and it was good to get a rare home game!

Mark Wild (19.92) 2 Steve Beverley (22.56) 3

Steve got the perfect start for the visitors with a maximum in the first throw of the night. Wildy replied with a 125, but despite Wildy only scoring under 60 once it was Steve who took the leg in 22 darts. Wildy levelled it up in the second leg out in 25 darts, and then went ahead 2-1 with a 102 finish for 24 darts with Steve sat on 36. Wildy started 121 in the 4th leg but his failure to find trebles for the rest of the leg allowed Steve back into it and with a 100 and three further 80+ scores Steve got down first and out in 21 darts to level at 2-2. Steve built on that with scores of 121, 100 & 99 in the final leg before clocking 80 for an 18-dart leg and a 3-2 win, which was to give Steve the Coventry MOM. Mark 5 tons, Steve 7 tons and a 180. 1-0 Coventry Railway.

Ian McFarlane (20.31) 3 Craig Gillin (17.65) 0

Ian well on top in leg 1 with back-to-back scores of 134, 100, & 94 leaving him tops which he took after 5 darts to go 1-0 up in 23 darts. Ian scored 100 & 3 further 80+ scores in the second, but missed doubles meant he won the leg in 26 darts to go 2-0 up. A steady if not spectacular third leg saw Ian secure the 3-0 win in 25 darts. Ian 3 tons, Craig 2 tons. Match score now 1-1.

Mark Birch (21.78) 3 Shaun Hackett (20.65) 0

Mark started with a ton but thereafter failed to find his usual heavy scoring in the first leg. He did take the leg in 26 darts to lead 1-0. In the second leg scores of 135 & 140 gave him the edge though both players had chances before Mark went 2-0 ahead in 25 darts. Shaun fought back in leg 3 with successive scores of 100, 134 & 100, but a maximum from Mark kept him on terms, before Mark took out 73 to claim the leg in 18 darts and a 3-0 win. Mark 4 tons and a 180, Shaun 3 tons. Sutton Sports now 2-1 up.

Jimmy Collins (20.31) 3 Drew Meek (18.68) 0

No tons from Jim in the first leg but scores of 90, 99 and 86 to leave 88, which he finished in 3 for a 21-dart leg saw him go 1-0 up. A ton apiece for the players in leg 2, but Jim’s steadier scoring gave him the edge and he took it in 24 darts to lead 2-0. Jim started well in leg three going away 140, 95, & 96 to leave 170 after 9 but failed to find his doubles. Jim did take the third leg in the end but only after 13 at a double, to see him home in the match 3-0. Jim 2 tons, Drew 2 tons. Match score now 3-1 to Sutton.

Barrie Linnecor (21.26) 3 Darren Swords (20.69) 2

A tough draw for Baz playing his first of the season, and despite scores of 100, 95 & 87 in the first leg he found himself 1-0 down in 24 darts. Baz started 125 in the second and followed up with two further 80+ scores. It was a very even leg but Baz got first chance and took out 52 in 2 for a 23-dart leg to level at 1-1. Baz started with 100 in the 3rd but could do little as Darren with the darts went out in 17 darts including scores of 121, 100 & 125. The 4th leg was very even but both players missed several chances before Baz levelled in 28 darts at 2-2. Baz started 140 in the decider, and this gave him the edge with steady scoring afterwards. Baz took out 54 in 2 for a 20-dart leg and a hard fought 3-2 win. Baz 4 tons, Darren 5 tons. Sutton now 4-1 up.

Matt Gallett (18.56) 3 Clive Miles (15.04) 0

Matt well in control in leg 1 with scores of 100 & 115, but he then took an incredible 25 darts to finish once reaching a double. He eventually took the leg in 42 darts, which effectively killed off any chance of a decent average. Leg 2 was much more like it though, a 140 and 2 further scores over 90 seeing Matt out in 20 darts, and in the third he hit back-to back tons before finishing in 19 darts for a 3-0 win. Matt 5 tons, Clive 1 ton. The match score now 5-1 to Sutton Sports.

Luis Barberan (24.66) 3 Paul Beverley (19.33) 2

Luis started steadily with 100 and 97 in the first leg, before just missing double 12 for a 144 finish. Paul with advantage of throw took out 58 in 2 for a 20 dart leg and a 1-0 lead. Luis started the 2nd leg 140, 140 to build a useful lead. Missed doubles almost cost him as Paul replied with 2 x 100 but Luis did level it in 24 darts, as Paul looked set to steal. Two tons apiece in the third leg, but both missed chances at doubles before Paul went 2-1 ahead in 30 darts. Luis levelled at 2-2 in the fourth comfortably with a 17-dart leg including scores of 140 & 125. Luis saved the best till last winning the decider in 15 darts (100, 93, 100, 100, 108f) with Paul back on 253 for a 3-2 win and the Sutton MOM. Luis 12 tons, Paul 5 tons. Sutton Sports now 6-1 up.

Dane Vickers (19.78) 3 Kevin Woodward (19.39) 0

A 140 from Kevin in his first 3 meant Dane was chasing early on but although failing to register a ton, steady scoring saw him down first and out in 27 darts. Back-to-back tons at the start of leg two gave Dane the advantage and he was down first and out in 23 darts for a 2-0 lead. Kevin looked set to pull one back as he started leg 4 100, 81, 100, 81 but he failed to follow these scores up. Dane fought back with scores of 81, 100 & 97 and both had chances before Dane took the leg in 26 darts for a 3-0 win. Dane 3 tons, Kevin 4 tons.

Final score Sutton Sports 7 Coventry Railway 1.

Running averages were Sutton 20.82, Coventry Railway 19.25.

Tons went Sutton 38+1, Coventry Railway 29+1.

In terms of averages it was clearly a poor performance. We had only recorded one other average as low as this one since the 2007-08 season, and in the ton count too it was a poor night. However, it was a welcome 7-1 win against a side who will undoubtedly on their night give a few teams in this league a difficult time.

We have earlier in the season got the bigger averages and ton counts only to drop points, so hopefully this will be a result we can build on and put a few results together in the coming weeks.

We look forward to the return at Coventry Railway and wish them the best for the rest of this season.

Next up, a trip to Bartley Green against the Midland Red.
