MATCH REPORT

Coventry Railway 5 Sutton Sports 3

A close fought game resulting in Coventry Railways first win of the season. For our part far too many doubles missed, but to be fair to the Coventry lads they stuck at their task and took the key legs on the night.

Derek Buckley (20.24) 3 Chris Turnbull (19.48) 2

A cracking start to the game, with Chris with 2 x 100, taking the first in 19 darts, whilst Derek had himself hit 3 ton plus scores to leave 54 after 18. The second leg saw more of the same……down to a double. Both players though having 8 at a double apiece before Derek levelled in 28 darts. Chris missed with 2 at tops in the 3rd and Derek took advantage going 2-1 up in 26 darts. Chris hit 3 tons in the 4th but almost let it slip with darts at a double in the leg into double figures before levelling up in 29 darts. Two tons from Chris in the last but Derek played a steady final leg including a 140 to take the match 3-2 in 19 darts. Derek 6 tons, Chris 8 tons. 1-0 Coventry.

Darren Swords (18.94) 3 Mark Birch (19.21) 2

Dart for dart in the first, with both having chances before Darren took it in 23 darts. A poor 2nd leg by both players standards, which proved crucial in the end, with Darren going 2-0 up in 26 darts. Birchy fought back in the 3rd leg, out in17 darts including a 140, 100 and a 95 finish. The 4th leg looked over too after 15 with Birchy leaving 30 having scored 3 tons. It took 15 to finish from there before he finally levelled up in 30 darts. A nervy decider saw both miss chances before Darren found the double in 32 darts for a 3-2 win. Darren 7 tons, Mark 8 tons. 2-0 Coventry.

Will Roberts (24.25) 3 Dane Vickers (22.63) 1

Dane got down quickly in the 1st leg with a 100 & 125, but had 6 at a double before Will took the leg in 19 darts. Dane bounced back in the second leg, with a 100 & 99 before clocking 56 for a 20 dart game. Both players had 4 darts at a double in the 3rd leg before Will took a 2-1 lead in 25 darts. An excellent 4th leg from Will, out in 16 darts for a 3-1 win with Dane left on 102 after 15. Will 8 tons, Dane 4 tons. 3-0 to Coventry.

Martin Giddings (23.10) 2 Ian McFarlane (24.42) 3

A good 1st leg, with Martin taking advantage of the throw winning in 18 darts, with Ian having scored 2 x100 left on 72 after 15. A close 2nd leg went to Ian, levelling up in 26 darts. Steady scoring in the 3rd saw Ian in front, hitting 3 scores of 90+ and a further 80+ on his way to a 22 dart leg and 2-1. Martin levelled in the 4th with an excellent 16 dart leg, pushed all the way by Ian who was left on tops. The decider went to Ian in 17 darts (133, 58, 133, 41, 80, 56f) for a 3-2 win and the Sutton MOM. Martin 6 tons, Ian 6 tons. 3-1 Coventry.

Paul Beverley (24.24) 3 Chris Millward (22.35) 0

Milly has been a big miss for us this year, and was playing only his 2nd game of the season. Milly was sat on 64 as a steady 1st leg saw Paul go one up in 21 darts including 140 & 100. A very even second leg went Paul’s way with advantage of throw in 20 darts despite a 100 & 123 from Milly. Milly with a 140 early on looked set to pull one back in the 3rd leg but missed tops, allowing Paul to take it in 21 darts for 3-0. Paul 5 tons, Milly 4 tons. Coventry 4-1 up.

Kevin Woodward (21.61) 1 Matt Gallett (24.16) 3

Kevin took the first with advantage of throw, a very close leg, with Matt very unlucky having scored 2 x 100 and 125. Matt then set off 140, 100 in the second and comfortably levelled the match in 19 darts. Matt was playing through the discomfort of his recent hernia op, but he still looked in good nick hitting 140 and taking the 3rd leg in 19 darts. Kevin had himself left 32. The 4th leg saw both players miss doubles before Matt who had scored 140 & 100 closed out in 25 darts for a 3-1 win. Kevin 5 tons, Matt 8 tons. Coventry 4-2 up.

Mark Westgarth (25.97) 3 John Kavanagh (21.16) 1

Scores of 138 & 2 x 100 gave Mark the edge against throw in the first leg, taking it in 20 darts. The second was a decent leg with JK left on 157 after 12 darts with 100 & 125, but unable to put enough pressure on Mark who took it in 15 darts (180, 81, 140, 40, 60f). JK rescued a disappointing 3rd leg with a 90 finish to take it in 27 darts and reduce the arrears to 2-1. Mark kicked on in the 4th leg though with 2 x100 and 125 before taking out 50 for an 18 dart leg and a 3-1 win along with the Coventry MOM. Mark 9 tons and a 180, JK 3 tons. Coventry 5-2 up.

Shaun Hackett (19.12) 0 Mark Wild (22.10) 3

Shaun had first chance in this one but missed and Wildy duly mopped up 56 for a 24 dart 1st leg. Mark took the second too in 24 darts this time with the advantage of throw. A better 3rd leg saw Wildy with back to back ton plus scores of 140 & 125, as he won that leg comfortably in 20 darts for a 3-0 win. Shaun 2 tons, Mark 4 tons. Final score 5-3 to Coventry Railway.

The match stats showed running averages as:

Coventry Railway 22.18, Sutton Sports 21.94, but poor doubles dragged both down. Sutton Sports converting only 15 of 90 darts at doubles on the night.

Tons were also marginally in Coventry’s favour:

Coventry Railway 48+1, Sutton Sports 45.

Well done to the Coventry Railway lads, but we certainly contributed to our own downfall on the night.

Next up its our home local derby with Erdington. We need an improved team performance there.
