MATCH REPORT

Coventry Bishopsgate 6 Sutton Sports 2

A tough follow up game to the match against Champions Leamington, it was a trip to last years runners up, Coventry Bishopsgate.

In the end it ended 6-2 to Bishopsgate. We were certainly unlucky in at least couple of the early games, with Mark Wild and Matt Gallett going very close, and Milly giving Noel Grant a scare early on. Credit to the Cov Bish lads though who played very well at the crucial moments in those key games. However, at 6-0 things were looking bleak, before Macca and Birchy took the last two games to add an air of respectability to the result.

Steve Giddings (28.00) 3 Mark Wild (25.37) 1

Wildy had a shot for 15 darts in the first, which included a maximum, eventually taking it in 20 darts. Steve responded with a 15 dart second leg, clocking 151. Wildy had left himself handily placed wanting just 108 after 12 in that one. Steve continued to take the 3rd in 17 darts for 2-1. Wildy left tops in the 4th after 18 but Steve's advantage of throw saw him out in 19 darts for a 3-1 win. Steve 9 tons, Wildy 8 tons and a 180. 1-0 Cov Bish.

Jimmy Hill (25.77) 3 Chris Turnbull (21.42) 1

A poor 1st leg for Chris even allowed Jim the luxury of 13 at a double before taking the 1st in 26 darts. A much better 2nd leg saw Chris level it in 19 darts. A cracking 3rd leg from both players with Chris leaving 142 after 12, but Jim out in 13 darts (81, 180, 140, 64, 36f) for a 2-1 lead. Back to back scores of 125 & 140 gave Jim the edge in the 4th and he closed it out in 20 darts for a 3-1 win. Jim 9 tons and a 180, Chris 4 tons. 2-0 Cov Bish.

Noel Grant (28.11) 3 Chris Millward (24.20) 1

A tough game for Milly in his first of the season, and he did well to take the first in 23 after Noel had several chances to take it. The second leg went to Noel, out in 18 darts including 3 ton plus scores. In the 3rd Noel had a shot for 14 darts, finally taking it in 19, before an excellent 13 dart 4th leg sealed it for Noel (180, 140, 77, 72, 32f). Milly had also started that leg with a maximum and had left himself 123 after 12. Noel 10 tons plus a 180, Milly 5 tons plus a 180. 3-0 Cov Bish.

Mark Sidgwick (24.63) 3 Matt Gallett (23.55) 2

Mark controlled the first leg, out in 19 darts with Matt back on 146. Matt was much better in the second, including 3 tons and leaving 58 after 15 darts. Sidgy took it out in 15 though for a 2-0 lead (136, 140, 46, 139, 40f). Undeterred, Matt kept his head taking the 3rd in 23 darts and then a nervy 4th where both missed chances before Matt took out double 6 for a 25 dart leveller. The 5th was dart for dart with both leaving tops after 15 darts (Sidgy including a maximum). Unfortunately for Matt, Sidgy had advantage of throw and took it out with his 3rd dart for 18 darts and 3-2. Mark 12 tons and a 180, Matt 10 tons. 4-0 Cov Bish.

Dave Crossingham (22.77) 3 John Kavanagh (20.90) 0

A slow start in leg one from JK in his first of the season, though back to back scores of 139 & 102 allowed him 2 at a double before Dave clocked out in 24 darts. An even scoring 2nd leg saw Dave home in 21 darts for 2-0. The 3rd saw JK with the advantage after 12 darts, but 9 poor darts from JK allowed Dave back into it and Dave responded with 140, 57, 64 out for a 21 dart 3rd leg and 3-0. Dave 4 tons, JK 4 tons. Cov Bish 5-0.

Paul Deslandes (20.88) 3 Adam Gallett (18.68) 0

Paul took a very even first leg, clocking 88 for 24 darts. Paul then put in 3 successive tons to leave him on 120 after just 12 darts. Adam pressured Paul with a 139 to leave 46, but Paul took the leg in 21 darts for 2-0. Paul was well on top in the 3rd though did miss several chances before closing out in 27 darts for 3-0. Paul 6 tons, Adam 1 ton. Cov Bish 6-0.

Dave Harris (21.98) 1 Ian McFarlane (21.16) 3

Dave started with a maximum and took the first against the darts in 20. Another maximum from Dave in the 2nd, but Ian checked out 120 for 18 darts and 1-1. Both had chances in the 3rd before Ian took it in 26 darts. Same story in the 4th where Dave had left 62 after 12 darts, but both missed chances before Ian sealed it in 25 darts for 3-1. Dave 4 tons and 2 x 180, Ian 5 tons. Cov Bish 6-1 up.

Mark Carter (22.39) 0 Mark Birch (26.84) 3

A great game from Birchy. He won the first against the throw in 19 darts with Mark Carter on 51. Both played a good 2nd leg, with Birchy, with 3 ton plus scores in the leg taking it in 17 for 2-0. A steady 3rd leg saw Birchy home in 20 darts for a deserved win. Mark Carter 2 tons, Mark Birch 7 tons.

Final score Cov Bishopsgate 6 Sutton Sports 2

Running averages: Cov Bish 24.32, Sutton 22.77
Tons: Cov Bish 56+5, Sutton 44+2

From our side it was great to see Ian & Mark each getting their 2nd wins in 3 games. Wildy & Matt were desperately unlucky too, and Milly, after a great season last year is now up and running again after his first game of the new season.

This Coventry Bishopsgate side were not runners up last year without good reason and they do have some excellent players. The better side won on the night and they will obviously be in with a shout again this year.

Next up for us Rugby away.
