MATCH REPORT

Cherry Tree 6 Sutton Coldfield 2

Despite the scoreline, a much better performance this week against a very strong Cherry Tree side. Four games went to the last leg, and all went against us, but we did top 50 tons on a night for the first time since we went to Kenilworth and won 8-0 in early December. That is something we were doing more often than not when playing well over the last couple of years.

Steve Sharpe (20.08) 3 Barrie Linnecor (18.98) 2

Its never easy up first away from home when you have been travelling for some time and had little chance on the board. Baz still dug in to take the first in 30 darts. Steve levelled in 26 at 1-1. Baz missed out on a 97 finish in the 3rd to go ahead, and had 3 more at a double before Steve took it in 23. Baz squared it up in the 4th taking out 60 for 24 darts. The 5th went to the wire, Steve took the leg in 22 darts, with Baz sat on tops. Steve 6 tons, Baz 4 tons. 1-0 Cherry Tree.

Jaz Athwal (25.14) 3 Dane Vickers (25.27) 2

Dane was quick out of the blocks taking the first in 20 against the throw. He looked good in the second but back to back ton plusses from Jaz and a 63 out saw him level in 21 darts. Jaz held his throw for 21 darts in the 3rd, but an excellent 15 dart leg (137, 96, 121, 93, 54f) saw Dane level it at 2-2. Dane started his 5th leg well too with 100, 99, 100, but Jaz was in great form himself taking the leg in 15 darts (135, 100, 100, 134, 32f) for a 3-2 win. Jaz 10 tons, Dane 9 tons. 2-0 Cherry Tree.

Steve Hine (22.10) 3 Paul Cumming (20.92) 0

Paul left 32 after 18 darts, and had 6 at a double to take the first. How costly that was to prove. The ‘Muffin Man’ took the leg in 24 and also took the 2nd in 20 darts, despite 3 ton plus scores by Paul in the leg. Paul had a chance in the 3rd but missed the single 17 under pressure to get a shot at tops. Steve did not need asking twice and sealed the 3-0 win in 24 darts. Steve 4 tons, Paul 6 tons. 3-0 Cherry Tree.

Shaun Brown (22.73) 3 Chris Millward (21.05) 2

Shaun has come on a lot since the double top league last summer. He went ahead in 19 darts with 2 x 140 and a 100. Milly bounced back for a 23 dart 2nd leg. Shaun went ahead again in 23 darts, before Milly squared it at 2-2 with a 20 dart leg which included the nights first 180. Shaun was first down in the 5th leg and took it with a 50 finish for a 3-2 win. Shaun 8 tons, Chris 7 tons and a 180. Cherry Tree 4-0 up.

Scott Mitton (31.31) 3 John Kavanagh (25.43) 0

JK not doing much wrong, but outclassed by Scott in this one. Scott out in 16 darts first leg which he started 100, 100, 100 & 177. JK will still be disappointed though having had 3 darts from 66 before Scott finished that one. The second leg saw Scott out in 19 darts with JK still handily placed on 88. In the 3rd JK left 86 after 15 darts which might well be enough most weeks, but not this week as Scott took the leg in a superb 13 darts (100, 125, 100, 140, 36f) taking the MOM award with it. Scott 10 tons and a 177, JK 5 tons. Cherry Tree home and dry at 5-0.

Ricky Frisby (21.86) 3 James Owen (20.48) 2

Jay took advantage of some poor finishing by Ricky to take the first in 27 darts with a 92 finish. Ricky levelled in the 2nd leg in 21 darts. Jay picked up in the 3rd but lost out as Ricky finished in 20 darts. Jay continued to improve each leg and took the 4th in 16 darts, even affording one slip on the way (125, 105, 7, 180, 76, 8f). Ricky was first down in the last and yet again the deciding leg went to the home side, Ricky taking it in 21 darts. Ricky 5 tons Jay 6 and a 180. Cherry Tree now 6-0 up.

Paul Merrett (20.01) 1 Mark Wild (21.67) 3

A steady performance from Wildy got him back to winning ways this week. Steady scoring saw him take the first in 22 darts. He made it 2-0 in 25 darts. Paul got down first in leg 3 to take it in 19 darts. Wildy though held on and took out 72 for 21 darts and a 3-1 win. Paul 5 tons, Wildy 3 tons. Cherry Tree 6-1 up.

Tommy Ryan (25.73) 1 Rob Hawker (26.61) 3

Pikey started well against Tom, his county team-mate with a 15 dart 1st leg (60, 60, 180, 140, 61f). Rob then went 2-0 up in 24 darts despite a few missed darts at doubles. Pikey looked set to seal the win in the 3rd leaving 62 after just 12 darts, but missed doubles allowed Tom in to take it in 20 darts. No mistake though in the 4th, as Rob started with 3 successive tons and clocked 98 for 18 darts and a 3-1 win. Rob also won the Sutton MOM award. Tom 8 tons, Rob 11 tons and a 180. Cherry Tree winning by 6-2.

We have a right to feel we didn’t really get much luck on the night, but there is no doubt this was a strong Cherry Tree side.

Running averages were Cherry Tree 23.62, Sutton Coldfield 22.55.

Tons were Cherry Tree 56+1, Sutton Coldfield 51+3.

Next up its Leamington away which is as tough as it gets, but let’s hope this gives us a lift to go and give them a game as we did at home when we drew 4-4 earlier in the season.
