MATCH REPORT

Bishopsgate 4 Sutton Sports 4

A tough place to go and get a result as proved by our previous away games against these lads, albeit they were always at the Cherry Tree in the past. We had won only once in the previous 5 away games against them, and lost the other 4. Our one success was a memorable 6-2 win in 2008-09 when we achieved our record running average of 24.00.

Jaz Athwal (21.90) 1 Mark Birch (25.53) 3

Jaz started the better with back to back scores of 125 & 100, but a timely 140 from Birchy put him back in the game. Jaz bust 80 which let Mark in and Mark duly took it in 25 darts for 1-0. Jaz held the edge throughout the 2nd leg and clocked 76 to level at 1-1 in 21 darts. Birchy then raised the bar with 2 excellent legs. He took the 3rd in 15 darts including a maximum (180, 46, 95, 123, 57f) with Jaz back on 219, and then went out in 15 again to take the match 3-1 (100, 100, 100, 140, 61f) and the Sutton MOM. Jaz 5 tons, Mark 7 tons and a 180. Sutton 1-0 up.

Anthony Allen (23.98) 3 Chris Turnbull (24.33) 2

Chris has thrown some great darts in Super league but had no luck in his debut season. This was the story once again as he went down 3-2 for the third successive game. Advantage of throw decided the first leg as both left a double after 18 darts. Anthony took it in 19. The second leg was just as tight with Chris taking it this time in 22 darts. It was dart for dart again in the 3rd with both having a shot before Anthony took it in 21 darts. Anthony looked set to take the 4th after hitting 140 and 2 x 100, but missed 3 darts at 20. Chris took out the 71 for 2-2 in 24 darts. Chris started the deciding leg 125, 140, 95 and looked home and hosed, but Anthony dug in with a 100 and then hit a 97 to leave 102 which he clocked for a 21 dart leg. Anthony 10 tons, Chris 6 tons. 1-1 the match score.

Ricky Frisby (24.23) 3 Ian McFarlane (23.22) 1

A cracking start for Ian with three back to back tons at the beginning of leg 1, before chipping out 56 for 18 darts. A close 2nd leg saw Ricky hold throw taking 51 in 2 for 20 darts. An early 140 for Ricky in the 3rd gave him the edge and he took it against throw in 21 darts. Scores of 140 & 135 put Ricky ahead in the 4th, but Ian had a shot to level before Ricky finished in 22 darts for a 3-1 win. Ricky 5 tons, Ian 5 tons. 2-1 to Bishopsgate.

Tommy Ryan (25.30) 3 Dane Vickers (21.95) 1

Dane started well with a 140 and held on to take the first in 24 darts. Tommy bounced back in the 2nd leg with 134 & 140 before clocking 72 for an 18 dart leveller. Steady scoring from Tommy in the 3rd saw him out in 17 darts, and further scores of 134 and 180 put him in command in the 4th which he took in 20 darts for a 3-1 win and the Bishopsgate MOM. Tommy 5 tons and a 180, Dane 5 tons. Bishopsgate 3-1 up.

Steve Hine (25.05) 3 Paul Cumming (19.67) 0

A close first leg saw Steve out in 22 darts. The second was a much better leg, with Steve hitting 140 & 100 on his way to a 17 dart leg. Steve played steadily in the third, taking it in 21 darts for a 3-0 win. It was always going to be a tough draw for Paul playing the Muffin Man on his own patch in what was Paul’s first game for 2 months. Steve 4 tons, Paul 1 ton. Bishopsgate 4-1 up.

Steve Crowther (18.90) 1 Adam Gallett (21.05) 3

Nip and tuck in the first leg, but a 140 from Adam seemed to have swung it. In the end 5 darts at a double almost let Steve in, but Adam closed out in 24 darts. Adam looked good for 2-0 with 140 and 100 in the 2nd leg but again he missed doubles. This time they were costly as Steve clocked 110 to level in 27 darts. Adam again had the edge in the 3rd and seeing Steve leave himself on 110 yet again, took no chances this time clocking 40 for a 23 dart leg. Adam started well in the 4th and back to back tons put him in control. Adam took the leg in 21 darts to tie up a 3-1 win. Nice to see Adam back to winning ways after some bad luck in recent weeks, particularly last time out when he had lost out with a 24+ average. Steve 4 tons, Adam 6 tons. 4-2 to Bishopsgate.

Wayne Venables (20.79) 2 Mark Wild (20.31) 3

Scores of 140 & 122 helped Wildy to the first leg, which he took in 22 darts. Wayne bounced back in spectacular style clocking 161 for an 18 dart leg. Wayne then won the 3rd against throw in 20 darts to leave Wildy looking down the barrel. Both struggled with scoring in the 4th but it was Wildy who took the leg in 26 darts. As is often the case those type of legs turn out to be crucial. Wildy started 122 and with 3 further scores of 80+ he did enough to get down first and take the deciding leg in 22 darts for a 3-2 win. Wayne 6 tons, Wildy 4 tons. 4-3 to Bishopsgate.

Steve Sharpe (22.17) 1 Matt Gallett (24.05) 3

If there was a player you want on in this position it is Matt. He trailed early in the first but banged in a 140 and then a 74 finish to go 1-0 up in 20 darts. A great 2nd leg saw him out in 17 darts with back to back scores of 100 & 140. A lower scoring 3rd leg dragged down the averages for both players, with Steve eventually taking it in 29 darts. Matt bounced back brilliantly though, and with 340 left went 100, 100, 120 before taking out double 10 next dart for 19 darts and a 3-1 win.

Final score Bishopsgate 4 Sutton Sports 4.

Running averages were Bishopsgate 22.79, Sutton Sports 22.51
Tons were Bishopsgate 42+1, Sutton 40+1.

A great comeback to grab a point against the team 2nd in the table, and a great boost with a tough trip to leaders Leamington next up.
