MATCH REPORT

Sutton Coldfield 3 Bartley Green 5

Bartley Green are a side we always seem to struggle against, and so it turned out to be again, as we let a 2-1 lead slip on the way to a 5-3 home defeat.

Mark Birch (25.83) 1 Martin Tibbetts (26.78) 3

What a start to this game between 2 county B team-mates. Mark went off 100, 180, 140 and narrowly missed his double for an 81 finish in 12 darts. He never got another chance as Martin clocked out 120 for 15 darts (81, 100, 140, 60, 120f). Another good leg in the 2nd with Mark levelling up in 16 darts (95, 60, 66, 140, 122, 18f). Martin went 2-1 up with the darts with a 17 dart 3rd leg. Mark looked set to level but narrowly missed double 18 for a 99 finish. A further 3 darts missed let Martin in and he closed out for 25 darts and a 3-1 win. Mark 6 tons and a 180, Martin 8 tons. 1-0 Bartley Green.

Dane Vickers (23.84) 3 Nick Leydon (22.53) 2

Nick went one up against the throw in 24 darts, then increased his lead with back to back 140’s in the 2nd leg, which he finished in 17 darts with Dane handily placed on 85. A superb 14 dart-leg from Dane (140, 134, 139, 48, 40f) reduced the arrears to 2-1, and a steady 4th saw Dane break throw in 20 darts to level at 2-2. The 5th was close with neither player finding the big score, but Dane with advantage of throw took out 60 for a 27-dart leg and a 3-2 win. Dane was also Sutton’s MOM. Dane 6 tons, Nick 6 tons. 1-1 the match score.

Matt Gallett (22.30) 3 James Hykin (20.26) 1

Matt went one up against throw in 18 darts in a steady leg. The second saw both players miss chances before Matt went 2-0 up in 25 darts. Three tons from Matt in the 3rd seemed set to sew it up but James clocked 92 for a 21-dart leg to get back to 2-1. Matt took control in the 4th but needed 9 darts to finish before closing out in 27 darts for a 3-1 win. Matt 7 tons, James 4 tons. 2-1 to Sutton.

Mark Wild (21.57) 1 Dave Marsh (21.75) 3

Wildy looked set for the first leg after a 123 left him 38, but 3 missed darts allowed Dave in to steal in 21 darts. A long drawn out 2nd leg saw both miss numerous chances before Dave took double 1 for 2-0 in 31 darts. A better 3rd leg from Wildy reduced the arrears in 22 darts, before the best leg of the match saw Wildy leave 62 after 15 darts, but get no shot as Dave closed out in 18 darts having hit 3 consecutive tons including a 180 for a 3-1 win. Wildy 4 tons, Dave 6 tons and a 180. 2-2 on the night.

Ian McFarlane (24.05) 0 Roger Kinsella (24.24) 3

All the legs could have gone either way in this game despite the 3-0 scoreline. Roger took the first in 18 darts (including a 180) with Ian sat on 40 after 15 darts himself having scored a 140 & 125. An even 2nd leg saw Ian in the box seat scoring a 140 and leaving tops after 18 darts, but 6 missed at a double let Roger in and he went 2-0 up in 23 darts. The 3rd was neck and neck, with Roger and Ian leaving 87 & 82 respectively after 18 darts. Roger had first chance and took it in 3 for a 21 dart leg and a 3-0 win. Ian 5 tons, Roger 5 tons and a 180. Bartley Green 3-2 up.

Adam Gallett (20.24) 3 Gareth Johnston (20.91) 2

Adam has had no luck in recent weeks but got back to winning ways against Bartley Green, though he had to dig deep to do it. Gareth took the first for Bartley Green against the throw in 23, with Adam having just missed a 102 out shot. Gareth then had chances to extend his lead but missed 6 at a double, allowing Adam to clock 84 for 1-1 in 30 darts. Steady darts from Gareth put him back ahead out in 22 darts for 2-1. Adam, however, then levelled at 2-2 with the 4th successive break of throw in the game for an excellent 17 dart leg. Gareth got down first in the decider, but missed 4 at a double and Adam took the leg in 26 darts for a great comeback 3-2 win. Adam 3 tons, Gareth 5 tons. 3-3 the match score.

Paul Cumming (17.98) 1 Paul Watkin (20.97) 3

Paul Cumming was off the pace in the first leg, with Paul Watkin taking the leg comfortably in 25 darts. The second was much better from ‘Cummo’ as he held throw in 24 darts to level up. He then left 74 after 21 in the 3rd but Paul Watkin used his advantage to take the leg in 23 darts and restore his lead. A cracking start to the 4th leg from Paul Watkin pretty much secured his win as he started 100, 100, 140, then just missed out on the 161 shot leaving 25 after 12. Double trouble kicked in, however, and just as the home player looked set to level up the Bartley Green lad took double 1 for a 24 dart leg and a 3-1 win. Paul Cumming 4 tons, Paul Watkin 7 tons. 4-3 to Bartley Green.

John Kavanagh (21.98) 0 Ashley Hykin (27.33) 3

A good first leg saw JK and Ashley leave 50 & 85 respectively after 15 darts. At that point the computer scorers spotted an error of 10 dating back to the first throw that had been missed by both marker and checker. After the ensuing confusion, JK missed his finish, Ashley coolly clocked the 85 and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of this game. The second leg saw Ashley out in 15 darts (60, 140, 100, 100, 101f) with JK well back. In the 3rd Ashley was again the steadier, taking it in 22 darts with JK sat on 71. Ashley taking the Bartley Green MOM with this 3-0 win. JK 1 ton, Ashley 6 tons. Final score Bartley Green the winners by 5-3.

All in all a below par performance from our side, as can be seen from the running averages and ton count. Even so, hats off to Bartley Green getting a deserved win on the night.

The running averages were: Sutton 22.22 (our 2nd lowest of the season), Bartley Green 23.10.

The tons were: Sutton 36+1 (with the lowest tons per leg total for Sutton since the 5-3 home defeat against Shard End last season), Bartley Green 47+2

Next up it is a very tough home game against Pikey & Co from Hall Green. We certainly need an improved performance in that game.
