MATCH REPORT

Bartley Green 3 Sutton Sports 5

Another good win to end the season, but despite a great run of 6 wins and 2 draws from our last 9 games we finished only 6th, just 1 point off 4th, as Rugby’s 6-2 win at Bishopsgate gave both those sides 91 points against our 90. However, we finished the season with 9 wins in all, and other than us, only the top two got above 7 wins for the season, so there are plenty of positives for us to take out of this season as a team.

It was also by far our strongest ever finish to a season and our 5-match winning run at the end equalled our previous record of 5 straight wins in Superleague, which overlapped the 2007/08 & 2008/09 seasons. It also equalled our longest unbeaten run of 6 games.

What we had this season was a good team spirit with some good young players which will stand us in good stead for the future, but most of all we benefited from the excellent form of three of the new boys who came over from Shard End, Ian McFarlane, Mark Birch and Matt Gallett who played superbly all season.

Regarding the Bartley Green match, there were clearly some big names missing for our opponents on the night, Tommy Aldridge & Dickie Foster to name just two, but after a poor start to the game we managed to grind a victory out on the night.

James Hykin (22.87) 3 Chris Millward (22.48) 1

It seemed business as usual for Milly as he took out 80 for a 21-dart first leg which had included a 125, but the warning signs had been there with James hitting a couple of tons himself in the leg. Milly started with a ton in the second leg, but three ton plus scores saw James down first and out in 19 darts for 1-1. No tons in the 3rd leg though each player hit 3 scores of over 80. Both missed shots to take it before James won in 25 darts for a 2-1 lead. The 4th leg went dart for dart, James hitting scores of 140 & 133, Milly hitting 100 & 135. James hit 133 to leave 6, Milly then missed 2 at a double from 75 to leave 6 himself. James took it 3rd dart for a 21-dart leg and a 3-1 win and what would ultimately be the Bartley Green MOM performance. James 7 tons, Milly 4 tons. 1-0 Bartley Green.

Greg Smith (18.24) 3 Chris Turnbull (19.20) 2

A steady start from Chris including a 100, but three missed darts from tops let Greg in to take it in 23 darts. Chris started the better in the second leg including a 123 but it took 13 at a double to close out the leg in 33 darts for 1-1. Chris started the third leg with a 100 and steady scoring saw him out in 26 darts for a 2-1 lead. Greg bounced back in the fourth leg with 2 x 140 and out in 18 darts for 2-2 with Chris left on 85. In the fifth leg Chris started the better with a 100 and 3 scores of 80+ but then missed 9 at a double to win the game. Greg took out 28 to win in 29 darts by a 3-2 margin. Greg 6 tons, Chris 5 tons. 2-0 Bartley Green.

Mick Lyden (16.35) 0 Mark Wild (21.47) 3

Wildy always in control in the first leg against an out of sorts Mick, including 2 tons, though missed a few doubles before going one up in 25 darts. A similar pattern in the second though this time Mark did clock 81 in 2 for a 23-dart leg and a 2-0 lead. Mick hit a maximum and a 100 in the third leg, but steadier scoring overall saw Mark down first and out in 22 darts for a 3-0 win. Mick 2 tons, Mark 3 tons. Bartley Green now 2-1 up.

Dave Marsh (24.64) 1 Ian McFarlane (25.04) 3

With the running averages looking woeful after 3 games this was a welcome improvement on both sides. Dave hit a 100 & 140 in the first but Ian took the leg in 16 darts against throw (97, 58, 135, 41, 140, 30f). Ian hit scores of 134, 100 & 100 in the second leg, and missed 6 at a double before taking it in 23 darts for a 2-0 lead. Dave had always looked dangerous though, and pulled a leg back in the third, out in 17 darts (45, 100, 100, 83, 137, 36f). A close 4th leg saw both players handily placed after 15 darts. Ian left tops going for a 102 finish, but got another chance after Dave bust 96. Ian didn’t miss again taking the leg in 19 darts for a 3-1 win and the Sutton MOM. Dave 9 tons, Ian 7 tons. Match score now 2-2.

Thomas Hykin (17.79) 1 Matt Gallett (21.98) 3

Matty started in menacing form with a maximum and 100 in the first leg, taking it in 20 darts for 1-0. Despite an early 100 from Matt in the second leg and a 140 from Thomas, both players then struggled to find the big scores. Both then missed several chances at doubles before Thomas levelled it up in 30 darts at 1-1. The third saw both struggling to find big scores again although Matt did hit 137 to leave 50. However, it took 9 darts from there before Matty won the leg in 27 darts for 2-1. The fourth was more like it from Matt out in 17 darts (140, 58, 100, 105, 38, 60f) for a 3-1 win. Thomas 4 tons, Matt 7 tons and a 180. Sutton now 3-2 up.

Keith Pemberton (20.95) 2 Mark Birch (22.89) 3

Yet another 5 leg game for Mark, that’s five of his last 7 games going the distance now. He looked to be on top in the first with a 125 and otherwise steady scoring, but Keith hit 91 to leave 50, Mark missed two at a double and Keith took out the 50 for a 24-dart game and 1-0. Mark put back-to-back scores in of 100 & 125 in the second, but this was not enough to prevent Keith going 2-0 up in 16 darts (45, 80, 140, 135, 61, 40f). Birchy was going to have to do it the hard way, and started 100, 140, 100 in the third leg, eventually taking it in 20 darts to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Back-to-back tons again in the fourth leg saw him out in 20 darts for 2-2 despite three tons from Keith in the leg. A close fifth leg looked to be going with throw to Keith until Mark hit 137 to leave 28. Keith missed his 90 finish, but there were then another 6 missed darts each at a double before Birchy wrapped it up in 26 darts for a 3-2 win. Keith 7 tons, Mark 9 tons. Sutton 4-2 up.

Tommy McGlone (22.38) 3 John Kavanagh (17.39) 1

JK proving once again that combining driving to away games and playing just don’t work. He was not at the races in this one, yet Tommy didn’t really get going till the 4th leg himself. Just a solitary ton from Tommy in the first leg and he was out in 25 darts with JK sat on tops. Back-to-back scores of 100 & 140 in the second left Tom on top and a struggling JK was still back on 105 when Tommy took it in 23 darts for 2-0. A ton apiece in an even third leg, with JK missing 4 at a double before taking it in 29 darts to bring it back to 2-1. The fourth leg finally woke the game up and turned out to be the leg of the night as Tommy went out in 14 darts (100, 100, 140, 137, 24f) for a 3-1 win. Tommy 8 tons, JK 1 ton. Sutton 4-3 up.

Tommy Hill (13.87) 0 Dane Vickers (20.31) 3

Tommy stepped in as reserve when Bartley Green’s 8th player couldn’t make it. Dane started with 100, and was out in 22 darts for 1-0 with Tommy back on 163. Dane then started 140 in the second to lead all the way down but missed several doubles before taking the leg in 28 darts for 2-0. Dane hit a ton in the third but otherwise struggled to find the big scores until he hit 97 to leave 106, which he took out next throw for a 24-dart leg and the only ton plus finish of the night. Tommy 1 ton, Dane 4 tons.

Final score Bartley Green 3 Sutton Sports 5.

Running averages were bordering on the embarrassing with Bartley Green 19.64, and Sutton Sports 21.35. A shame from our point of view because even a 22.00 average on the night, which we had failed to achieve only three times previously this season, would have given us our highest ever season team running average in Superleague.

Tons went Bartley Green 44+1, Sutton 40+1.

We look forward to seeing our opponents next season, though I understand they may be moving venue again.
